Financial Advice is Finally Getting its Due

2 min read

According to new research from Cerulli Associates, 68% of affluent investors now believe financial advice is worth the fee - up from just 38% in 2010. That’s a meaningful shift - not just in numbers, but in mindset.

After nearly 30 years in this business, this trend doesn’t surprise me at all.

Financial advice isn’t becoming more valuable because markets are more difficult, but rather because people’s financial lives have become more complex.

For decades, many investors confused or conflated “investment planning” and “financial planning”. If the portfolio was up, everything felt right. But more and more, especially among retirees, that mindset is changing.

The Cerulli study reveals investors are increasingly recognizing investment management is just one piece of a much larger puzzle - and it’s not even the hardest part.

Real planning integrates tax strategy, income distribution, estate planning, Social Security timing, and risk management into one coordinated approach.

Don’t get me wrong. A well-constructed portfolio matters. But without a broader plan, it’s incomplete. It doesn’t address taxes. It doesn’t coordinate income streams. It doesn’t protect against poor decisions during volatile markets. And it doesn’t necessarily align with long-term goals around family, legacy, or lifestyle.

Today’s reality is this: Accumulating wealth prior to retirement and managing wealth during retirement are two completely different challenges. And candidly, the former is WAY easier than the latter.

A statistic I often reference is 38% of the deaths on Mt. Everest occur on descent. Getting to retirement has only brought you the summit. You still need to get back down and make that money last (longer than you do).

Over the past 20+ years, the winds in the equity market sails have done much of the heavy lifting. Between a historic bull run and easier access to investment tools, anyone who systematically squirreled away money has seen their assets grow, likely to levels they never envisioned possible.

At the same time, many retirees are sitting on highly appreciated portfolios built over decades. These aren’t simple “buy/sell” decisions anymore – they’re complex tax and planning decisions that need to be handled carefully.

But retirement completely flips the equation.

Now the questions become:

  • How do I turn this portfolio into reliable income?
  •
  • How long will it last?
  •
  • How do I minimize taxes as I draw it down?
  •
  • How can I avoid a loss of -20% or more?
  •
  • How do I protect against market healthcare costs and longevity?

That’s not investment management. That’s comprehensive financial planning.

For Baby Boomers, this couldn’t be more relevant.

We’re seeing a generation moving deeper into retirement, while also living longer than ever. A 25 to 30-year retirement is no longer the exception. That creates a much wider margin for error and a much greater need for thoughtful, ongoing guidance.

And perhaps most importantly: The biggest risks in retirement are often behavioral, not market driven.

One poorly timed decision - selling in a downturn, taking too much income too soon, ignoring tax consequences - can have a lasting impact. In many cases, the real value of an advisor isn’t just what they recommend – it’s what they help you avoid.

That’s why I believe we’re seeing this shift towards appreciating professional guidance. Investors aren’t just paying for performance anymore. Instead, they’re paying for the “Three C’s”: clarity, coordination, and confidence.

And in retirement, those things matter more than ever.

If you’re approaching or already in retirement, the question no longer is “How’s my portfolio doing?”

It’s “Do I have a plan to turn what I’ve built into the life I want, while protecting it along the way?”
